REMINDER: W-2S AND SOME 1099-MISC DUE TO AGENCIES ON JANUARY 31

The IRS has changed filing deadlines for Form W-2 and some Form 1099s.

FORM W-2

PRIOR RULES FOR W-2

W-2s were due to employees on January 31, and due to the Social Security Administration on February 28, or March 31 if filed electronically.

NEW RULE FOR W-2

W-2s are due to employees and Social Security Administration on January 31, whether you file paper copies or electronically. The Commonwealth of Virginia also adopted the federal deadline for W-2 filings.

CORRECTING FORM W-2

If you need to make corrections after you file W-2s, you can file Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement.

FORM 1099-MISC

CHANGES TO 1099-MISC FILING DATES

If you file Form 1099-Misc and you report amounts in Box 7: Nonemployee Compensation, you will need to have those filed by January 31. If you don’t have an amount in Box 7, then the filing deadline remains February 28 for paper and March 31 for electronic.
