IRS DIRECT PAY

Using this method, the taxpayer will be asked to verify their identity by using a prior year tax return (Filing status, name, social, date of birth and address used on the tax return).

Example: Verification year is 2016 – taxpayer will use 2016 information filed on that return

Gather that information prior to logging on to the website. Follow the steps and print a confirmation number. By keeping the confirmation number, you can use this same website to look up the payment.

Advantage to this method – no set up time, payment can be made for the following business day.
Disadvantage – the only way to look up payment history is by using the confirmation number for each payment made.

Using this method, the taxpayer will enroll for the site, be sure to choose “individual” enrollment.

The enrollment process generates a four digit pin which is required to log on to the site. After initial enrollment, the pin will be mailed to the taxpayer within one week. Using the pin letter received in the mail, tax payer will create a password.

Advantage – Multiple payments can be made with future dates and payment confirmations and history are stored on the site for future reference.
Disadvantage – enrollment takes at least one week.
